FP Plus speeds hospital re-fit

Prysmian

FP Plus enhanced cable from Prysmian Cables & Systems, formerly Pirelli Cables, has been installed throughout Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, Fife, as part of a £100,000 upgrade of the fire alarm system, helping to reduce the installation time by over a month.

The upgrade project, which lasted for 11 months, required Glasgow contractors BNC Electrical to install 20,000 metres of FP Plus cable as part of the new fire alarm system that needed to comply with the enhanced standards of BS 5839.

Nick Crowe, Senior Partner of BNC Electrical based in Bonnybridge, said: "Enhanced cables are being increasingly specified in large buildings without sprinklers such as schools, colleges and hospitals. This was my first time using FP Plus, which is much easier to use than MICC. It's so simple to strip back the cable to prepare it for terminations. With 6,000 terminates in 20,000m of cable, FP Plus speeded the job immensely saving a least one month on the project."

Terry Journeaux, technical marketing manager at Prysmian, said: "FP Plus is an easy to install product, introduced specifically to comply with the 'enhanced' cable test requirements of BS5839-1:2002, where survival time in the BS8434-2 and BS EN50200 tests must be 120 minutes. Its design advantages and ease of termination are seen as particular installation benefits, especially on projects such as Victoria Hospital, which required a large number of terminations."

FP Plus is fully compliant with all relevant British Standards specifications for fire alarm cabling and has been independently approved by BASEC and LPCB.
