There was a time when wiring devices were very much functional items, with home owners paying little or no attention to them - in fact, as long as they worked this was more than sufficient for their needs.

Caroline Boden of Legrand talks to VoltiNEWS about the changes that have resulted in the transformation of the humble wiring device into an interior design accessory that is every bit as important to a new kitchen as work surfaces and stylish electrical appliances.
“In 2005, we launched Synergy – an evolved system of wiring devices that was aimed at completely redefining the market by turning such products into must-have style accessories.
In the mid-1990s our televisions were hit with a veritable explosion of home makeover shows that brought interior design to the fore of public attention. As a result everything from door handles to taps, plugs and sockets to light switches was catapulted to prominence. No longer were chunky white wiring devices that clashed with the rest of the décor desirable and so the big DIY stores jumped on this new, interior design-led, bandwagon. Shelves were suddenly packed with decorative accessories.
Going hand in hand with the public’s surge in interior design interest was a huge increase in the requirement for wiring devices – a change that was brought about by both lifestyle and technological developments.
What all of this meant was that where once the demand was limited to just one light switch and a couple of power points in the average room, the demand grew to the extent that wiring devices suddenly became an important element of any interior design scheme.
When it was launched Synergy was amongst the first ranges to offer a solution to these new demands and five years on the fact it is still a firm favourite with interior designers and specifiers across the UK is testament to its success.
An important part of this enduring appeal is that it provides multiple function solutions that combine style with problem solving practicality. If you consider how, over the years, the number of electrical appliances commonly found in kitchens has grown, it’s clear to see the need for a stylish solution that provides multiple wiring device functions.
This was one of the key reasons for the development of Synergy grid. Available in sizes from 1 to 24 gang, and offered in all the different Synergy surround plate finishes, it can incorporate a full range of 10AX and 20AX switches, all of which are available in a choice of white or anthracite rocker and can be engraved to identify individual kitchen appliances. In addition, the grid solution was designed to accommodate all of Legrand’s modular functions, meaning it is perhaps one of the most flexible grid solutions on the market.
Synergy’s appeal extends well beyond grid solutions. Cooker control and fused connection units are available in every finish, along with triple LED-indicator sockets, offering a complete range of matching wiring devices suitable for any kitchen design.
The Synergy range was developed with the intention of having the maximum possible appeal, key to which was the creation of two distinctly different decorative product offerings, Synergy Modern and Synergy Traditional. Both of which are offered in a choice of stylish finishes to complement any design theme.
Synergy Modern is very much aimed at contemporary environments. Featuring screwless plates for an added touch of style, it was launched with nickel and silver finishes. The nickel finish helps to create a ‘warm’ contemporary look and the silver option provides the perfect solution for ultra ‘cool’ interiors.
While the standard white finish has been Synergy’s biggest seller, the decorative nickel and silver finishes have proved extremely popular in developments where interior style is a key focus. So much so, in 2008 we decided to expand the modern range with two new ultra stylish finishes, matt black and black nickel.
Sitting alongside Synergy Modern, the Synergy Traditional range is available with brushed steel, polished steel and satin brass finishes and ensures a classic look can be maintained throughout any interior. The ‘warm’ brass finish adds warmth and elegance to any relaxing setting, while the ‘cool’ brushed steel finish is ideal for busy environments where accessories are constantly in use. Last but not least, the polished steel option provides an equally ‘cool’ look that is guaranteed to turn heads due to its stunning mirror finish.
As part of Legrand’s celebrations to mark Synergy’s fifth birthday, the company has extended its appeal so that those working on smaller scale jobs can reap the benefits of installing it. To do this Legrand has paid heed to the growing demand from wholesalers and contractors to make Synergy available as over the counter wiring device solutions. And what’s more, the prices on all Synergy Modern products have been rolled back to 2005 launch prices until further notice.
